Hello voices from the bench community, John Wilson here and I wanted to share some news about the evolution of the Programill lineup. Most importantly, Ivoclar’s new PrograMill 7. What stands out right away is the reduced air consumption this mill requires, but what you'll notice first is that impressive new touchscreen. For us, the biggest advantage has been increased spindle power. My laboratory's known for these larger cases with complex geometries, and I can tell you that extra power really makes a difference. Next time you see your Ivoclar representative, be sure to ask about the PrograMill 7 and tell them John Wilson sent you. Thank you.

At exocad Insights in beautiful Mallorca, we finally caught up with Felix from Imagine USA—and the timing couldn’t have been better. As an exocad dealer on the front lines of digital dentistry, Felix shared his excitement about the strong turnout, the familiar faces, and most importantly, the innovation coming from exocad. What stood out most? The new exocad Hub and its cloud-based capabilities, along with powerful AI-driven tools inside DentalDB designed for efficient batch processing. For Felix and the Imagine team, it’s not just about seeing what’s new—it’s about putting it to the test. By running new features through their own production facility first, they ensure real-world performance before bringing solutions to their customers. Beyond the technology, Felix emphasized the value of being there in person—connecting face-to-face with partners, having meaningful conversations, and stepping back to see where the industry is headed. And of course, doing it all in Mallorca doesn’t hurt either.

"LIVE" again at the 2026 DLAT meeting, two very different conversations came together around one common theme: the future of dental technology is still being shaped by passionate people willing to learn, teach, and adapt. First, the podcast catches up with returning guest Tiffany Prater from Destination Orthodontic Lab, who shares how her lab journey has evolved from running a large commercial space with employees to building a smaller, more personal business focused on private practices and hands-on craftsmanship. Alongside her is Sydney Ribera, a young technician discovering orthodontics through mentorship, creativity, and a fascination with bending wire and pouring colorful acrylic retainers. The conversation dives into the realities of learning ortho in today’s digital world, the importance of organizations like the Orthodontic Resource Group, and why mentorship still matters more than ever in a profession where most of the training happens shoulder-to-shoulder.

Then the crew sits down with Marlin Gohn from Argen to talk about everything from next-generation zirconia to massive dental labs in China and the surprisingly common mistakes labs make when choosing disc sizes for milling. Marlin breaks down Argen’s new gradient translucency zirconia, explains why nesting strategy matters more than most labs realize, and shares real-world troubleshooting tips that can save labs time, money, and remakes. The conversation also wanders through SLM frameworks, milled gold crowns, PFMs, translating lectures in China, and why some old-school techniques still outperform the newest trends.

Special Guests: Marlin Gohn CDT, Sydney Ribera, and Tiffany Prater CDT.

-
This week at the Dental Laboratory Association of Texas Meeting 2026, the microphones stayed hot as three completely different conversations all circled around the same thing: how fast the dental lab industry is evolving. First up, the crew sat down with Tony Aliatim from Axis Dental Milling to talk about going from biomedical engineering and printing silicone heart models for surgeons… to becoming one of the go-to names in dental milling. From industrial machining roots in Michigan to AI-powered calibration systems and Straumann plug-and-play workflows, Tony breaks down how VersaMill machines are helping labs mill everything from zirconia to implant abutments faster, smarter, and safer. Along the way, the conversation dives into HyperDent, trade show madness, wet vs dry milling nightmares, and why dental technicians may not realize how close this industry really is to aerospace-level manufacturing.

Then things shifted from mills to maintenance with Rebekah Serrago and Chris Wilson from Garland Dental Services. What started decades ago as a garage-based repair business fixing handpieces has grown into one of the industry’s best-kept secrets for equipment sales, service, and support. Rebekah shares the story of growing up folding flyers for her father’s repair company before eventually becoming CEO and expanding Garland into a massive online sales and service operation supporting everything from ovens to mills. Chris joins in to talk preventative maintenance, service certifications, keeping ancient ovens alive, and why labs desperately need dealers that actually understand the equipment they sell. It’s equal parts family-business story, repair shop wisdom, and hilarious behind-the-scenes dental lab banter.

Finally, the future officially arrived when the podcast crew sat down with Antoine Coppens from Relu and orthodontic lab owner Christian Saurman of New England Orthodontic Laboratory. What started as four engineering students experimenting with AI in Belgium somehow turned into fully automated dental workflows capable of designing surgical guides, night guards, models, and restorations in minutes. The conversation explores how AI is reshaping lab workflows, reducing manual design time, integrating directly into LMS systems, and even learning individual lab preferences. Christian explains how his custom-built orthodontic lab management system helped eliminate workflow chaos and automate huge portions of production, while Antoine gives a fascinating look into where dental AI is headed next. Between AI-generated appliances, automated scan checks, and self-learning workflows, this episode feels less like science fiction and more like a preview of what labs will look like over the next five years. Special Guests: Antoine Coppens, Chris Wilson, Christian Saurman, Rebekah Serrago, and Tony Aliatim.

From wire-bending machines and digital ortho workflows to Vulcanite dentures and photogrammetry, this episode from the DLAT floor is packed with stories, laughs, and a whole lot of dental lab wisdom.

First up, the crew sits down with Jason Dyas — better known these days as the man behind Ortho Outlaw and everyone’s favorite outlaw mascot, Clyde. Jason shares his journey from construction work and garage-built orthodontic appliances to running successful ortho labs and diving headfirst into digital technology. What started with fax-machine marketing and Walmart bench grinders eventually evolved into automated wire-bending machines, digital scanning, social media content creation, and a growing mission to help older labs embrace modern workflows instead of shutting their doors. The conversation covers everything from AI-driven ortho tech and the future of wire bending to building a brand, traveling to industry events around the world, and how Ortho Outlaw became one of the most recognizable new names in orthodontic lab social media.

Then the podcast catches up with longtime friend of the show Jim Collis for an incredible deep dive into 45 years of dental technology experience. Jim talks about teaching hands-on courses at DLAT, helping labs transition from analog workflows into digital dentures and 3D printing, and why education is still the key to success in modern dentistry. From discussing AI-assisted denture design and automated workflows to reminiscing about fixing Vulcanite dentures and the earliest days of implants, Jim delivers one amazing story after another. Along the way, he shares lessons from his CDT journey, the mentors who shaped his career, his passion for consulting and education, and why he still loves this industry after nearly five decades. It’s equal parts history lesson, technology discussion, and classic Voices From the Bench chaos — complete with Star Trek references, Slurpee stories, and enough off-topic tangents to make Barb proud. Special Guests: Clyde, Jason Dyas, and Jim Collis CDT.

exocad Insights in Mallorca, Spain Apr 30 - May 1 https://exocad.com/insights-2026

This week we finally sit down with the one and only Matthew Douglas — technician, educator, denture-setting machine, former Affordable legend, past DLAT president, and all-around force of nature out of Texas.

Matt’s story starts with baseball. A promising career cut short by a hip injury (the “Bo Jackson thing,” as he calls it) led him to find a different path — one that started at TSTI in Waco and ended up shaping thousands of dentures, dozens of labs, and one of the fastest-growing state dental lab associations in the country.

From living in an RV at the end of an airport runway while in school… to learning how to tear down porcelain ovens and rebuild lathes… to mastering ambidextrous denture setups with a soldering iron (yes, really), Matt built his foundation the old-school way. And he built it fast.

We dive deep into his 12-year run with Affordable Dentures — managing high-production labs doing 60+ arches a day, training technicians across the country, helping open over 200 sites, and eventually becoming a regional leader. He shares what it takes to build systems that move that kind of volume — staggered lunches, zero idle time, and a whole lot of hustle.

From there, Matt takes us through Barksdale Dental Lab, the early days of All-on-4, learning analog conversion workflows before digital streamlined everything, and why zirconia has changed the long-term game for full-arch restorations.

When Matt returned to Texas and got involved with the Dental Laboratory Association of Texas (DLAT), the show had about a dozen booths. Today? Over 100. He breaks down how restructuring leadership, empowering the right people, removing outside management costs, and reinvesting in members transformed DLAT into one of the strongest state meetings in the country.

If you want to grow your business, you need clear insight into what’s happening inside your operation and across your customer journey. That’s where Icortica comes in.

At Canadian Dental Labs, Icortica has become a cornerstone of how we operate—giving us at-a-glance visibility into performance, helping us focus our efforts, spot opportunities early, and solve problems before they grow. It takes the guesswork out of decision-making and shows us what to do next.

Successfully having the first dental laboratory convention of 2021 took the work of many passionate people involved with the Dental Laboratory Association of Texas (DLAT). While we were not there physically, we were there live, not live from the Argen booth. This week we got to talk to:

Tim Frezel - Lab owner from Waco Texas

Jan Rainey - Retired lab owner now cleaning the air with Pure Air Living

Bennett Napier - From the NADL

Keith Wilson - Locale Argen rep and amazing "Official Guest Grabber"

Enjoy the conversations from the first show of 2021

Whip Mix introduces the Bellus3D Dental Pro Face Scanning Solution. This new, practical addition to dentistry provides the dentist with a fast, easy, and affordable way to capture a detailed 3D facial scan and the laboratory an intelligent way to create the smile design. With this app, a complete 3D facial (and even whole head) scan can even be captured for virtual model and articulator alignment.

You can now put a face to your digital workflow with the Bellus3D Dental Pro.

What do you call a group of technicians in Texas? The first successful lab meeting of the year! That's right, back in late March the Dental Laboratory Association of Texas (DLAT) held their annual conference. It was also the first in-person dental lab meeting of 2021. While we couldn't be there, our good friends at Argen set up a laptop, microphone, and some speakers so we could record remotely from their booth. Local Argen rep and all around rockstar Keith Wilson kept us busy bringing by so many great people at the show. This week we have conversations from 5 wonderful attendees/staff/vendors.

Cade Tippet

Sit back and enjoy the sounds of live "in-person" conversations.

Few things create more interest today than the Digital Denture. Whip Mix has developed a processing system for printed dentures, which uses Dentca, the first 3D-printed denture and denture teeth resins to receive FDA clearance. Their physical properties and biocompatibility pass FDA requirements and enable the printed denture properties to be very similar to conventional dentures. The material, coupled with fast and easy 3D-printing with Asiga printers and the convenience of curing with a Uvitron UV light, results in fewer dentist visits, predictable fit, re-printable data files, lower costs and excellent intraoral denture performance.

So you get a letter from the FDA stating that they will be in your lab in a few weeks to inspect your operations for a certain restoration you are fabricating. What do you do? Panic? Leave town? Put your model room in charge and say good luck? Tim Torbenson has been dealing with the FDA and the dental industry for years and that's why he started Evo820 to help labs be compliant with the new rules. Tim comes on the podcast to talk about the history of the FDA looking at dental labs, why it is changing, and what you can do to prepare yourself for when they do come. We have a lot of fun during this conversation about a very serious topic.

When you can't be somewhere, the next best thing is to talk to the people who could. That is what Elvis and Barb did in early October. Argen partnered up with VFTB to set up a computer and a microphone at the DLAT (Dental Laboratory Association of Texas) conference and talk to many of the attendees. This week wraps up all of the fantastic conversations from wonderful people who were brave enough to attend the first in-person meeting since the beginning of the pandemic.

First up is Jason Stubbs, who is amazing at getting the word out on social media about all the amazing things the DLAT is doing and also speaking at the event about using Texas Dental Lab law to get new clients. Then sitting down is a one-woman lab owner, Bianka Nathery, who talks about the pros and cons of working by yourself and learning the craft in Germany where she grew up. Then we wrap up the whole conference with Mel Thorp, who 50 years ago was in a horrible accident that led him on a career where he earned 3 CDTs and still enjoys working on the bench. Great fun from the "DEE-LAT"!

The UP 3D P5 milling maching from Aurident is a 5 axis, efficient, dry mill. Great for milling zirconia, PMMA and wax. It boasts software that produces high precision and fast milling. It can mill a crown in 14 minutes and the tool life yields about 60-80 hours of quality restorations. A game changer for labs of all sizes, big and small. For under $20K, a small lab can now do their own milling instead of outsourcing and reducing their profits. Quite impressive! Give Aurident a call at 800-422-7373 or you can visit their website at aurident.com.

Using 3D printed Dentca Temporary Resin is the easy, fast, clean and accurate way of creating natural-looking temporary restorations using Dentca Temporary C&B 3D Print Resin from Whip Mix.

The new temporary material is FDA cleared, biocompatible, photocurable, and can be printed fast. That patient can be temporized with the highest quality temporary crowns that last a minimum of one full year in the mouth. Dentca C&B Temporary features excellent life-like esthetics and shade-matching capability with Vita shades A1, A2, A3, A3.5, B1, B2, and BL (Bleach).

Dentca Temporary C&B resin is validated for use with the Asiga Max, Asiga Pro 2, Asiga Pro 4K, and the Whip Mix Veribuild printers, and with the following curing units: Uvitron (SunRay 400 and IntelliRay 600), and the CUREbox Plus.

What a strange week for the world. We can't even begin to express our feelings for everyone and our industry. That is why we wanted to bring in the Executive Director of the NADL to give us an update for our industry on the COVID-19 virus.

NADL COVID-19 Resource Links
The Foundation of Dental Laboratory Technology Learning Library

Then because we want everyone to have some sense of normalcy we continue with the originally planned episode.

Back in January and thanks to Kettenbach, Elvis and Barb went to the Voices of Dentistry. A event geared towards podcast in the dental field. Being the only podcast dedicated to dental laboratories at the event, we were able to talk to a bunch of people that give us an interesting perspective that we normally don't see. First up is Jordon Comstock from Boomcloud. Jordon comes from the lab and now runs a service to help dentist become less dependent of insurances. Which would be good for labs. Next up is Craig Cody, a CPA for dentist giving us interesting view we usually don't see. Then we have Dr. Zak Allmand on who is a practicing dentist that got sick of credit card fees when he opened his own practice. So now he started his own credit card processing company called Apex Payment Solutions. Labs should check them out for some amazing savings.

Then because every year we have our first guest every on the podcast on, Renata Budny joins us from the Argen booth at LMT Lab Day Chicago 2020!

Alien Milling Technologies is a cutting-edge Dental Milling Center known for using the latest methods and technologies in milling top dental prosthetics. They can help your lab by milling everything, like crowns, abutments, partials, guards, and even titanium bars. Best part is that they are all milled right here in the USA. Plus they also provide the same zirconia they mill in-house. Until the end of March 2020, if you buy 4 pucks you get one FREE! See all they have to offer at www.alienmilling.com.

There are a lot of lab putty materials out there. When most labs try Panasil Lab Putty from Kettenbach they are amazed by the quality and consistency. It works wonders on your matrixing, indexing, and duplicating needs. Try some today, and for being a listener of the podcast when you call 877-532-2123 and mention the code – Dental Lab Podcast 199, you can get a box of Panasil Lab Putty and a box of Futar Bite Registration all for $199. Check out http://www.kettenbach-dental.us/ for more information.

Elvis and Barb wrap up the conversation they got while at the Vision 21 meeting from Las Vegas back in January. Elvis met Jesse Flor who owns a laboratory in California that has become a 100% digital lab, but also with his background working for DSOs has also opened up a few dental practices. His ownership of both has given him an interesting perspective into both fields. Then Elvis talks to two of the four participants who were on stage during the “Fireside Chat” about second generation lab owners. Michael Farago and Dory Sartoris both took a path in life that originally had them doing something other than the family lab. But they have now taken a leadership roll in their lab and are killing it by bringing non-bench-technician experiences into the workflow.

We really enjoy talking to people that are passionate about what they do. When JDT released their 2020 “Who’s Hot” there was one technician that stood out. Christopher Gajewski is a man on the mission to organize and educate all the ortho laboratories. Chris owned a ortho lab but has now started working 100% for the Association of Orthodontic Laboratory Professionals. We talk to Chris about his beginning, were he sees ortho labs going in the age of digital dentistry, his opinion on clear aligners, starting the AOLP, and his desire to educate the public.

We start with Registered Assistant Sarah Mathis from Duece Dental Laboratory in Waco, Texas. She talks about going from Clinical to Laboratory and how the chair side has made her a better technician.

Then we are joined by Donna Smith CDT from Digital Ceramics by Design in Denton, TX. Donna talks about her lab, how she got there, and why she likes working with zirconia.

We then wrap up the whole conference talking with Scott Ruehle from the Sebrite Agency.

In this month of Appreciation of CDTs and Dental Laboratory Technicians, we can't express enough our thanks for all the wonderful people that sit down with us at conventions, meetings, symposiums, or anywhere else we might find ourselves recording live. This week is no different as we bring you two fantastic interviews we did during our visit at the DLAT (Dental Laboratory Association of Texas) conference we were at back in April. We sat down with:

-Jim and Samantha Emmons. Jim (CDT) talks about how much of his career has been teaching and inventing and some of the amazing stuff he has come up with and still coming up with. He talks about a non-aerosol spray on glaze and a way to do a shade analysis with a smart phone. Be sure to check out Spectrafire.com to learn more.

-Mac Perry from San Antonio leaves a great "First Impression" and talks about learning about dental technology in the Air Force, going to Saudi Arabia, and then settling down at his own lab. An amazing experience worth sharing.

Wow a whole year! 52 straight weeks of podcasting. Thank you to everyone who listened, participated, and shared with their friends. All the hard work has been paid back by the support of the industry and the fact that we can have had super cool people on to interview that make it easy. Let's do another 52 episodes, shall we?

At LMT Lab Day Chicago 2019 Barb and Elvis had a chance to set up a booth, bring some headphones, recording equipment, and grab anyone willing to sit down with us and record face to face. It was an amazing experience and we got a TON of interviews to release.

To celebrate our first year, we sit down with Renata Budny CDT, TE at LMT Lab Day Chicago to talk about her being our first guest, what is happening at The City University of New York, and what do professors and students do at Lab Day. We are then joined by a great student, Elias Asevedo who talks about the school and his future in dentistry.
