We are once again showcasing some wonderful conversation that we got while in the exocad booth at IDS 2025. It's funny to travel all the way to Germany to talk to two Americans, one of them even works with Barb!

First up is the CEO of the Leixir Dental Group, John Krier. John talks about coming to dental from orthopedics and the differences he is noticing. Only 18 months into his new role, John has already visited every lab in the Leixir group and has started to change the culture of over 1000 employees to empower them to take ownership of the work they do.

Then we meet fellow podcaster, Dr. Jeff Horowitz. Dr. Horowitz has two practices in South Carolina, GP and Sleep and airway. He talks about the importance of creating the space in the arches for better sleep and how they are even expanding the palate on adults. Dr. Horowitz is also 1/3 of the podcast Dentist IN the Know and tells us all about how a couple of dentists got together during the pandemic to chat about what they all love so much.

Creating good culture in a dental lab is not easy. It takes dedication from owners and managers to set the path that the lab can follow. Two brothers both went through the apprenticeship program with John Archibald in the 90s. Darin Swartz was instantly hooked and opened up Swartz Dental Arts in the basement of a dental office after graduation. Followed by his younger brother, Mike Swartz graduated and opened his own lab. You would think they would partner up, but for 15 years they ran separate labs in the same space. After seeing technology coming into the industry, it was time to partner up and create Diamondhead Dental Lab. They talk about doing their own apprenticeship program, growing to 40 employees, creating a culture of partnership and quality, how they stay relevant in ever changing workflows, and staying true to their "North Star"

First up is MIYO expert, teacher, guru Terry McQuiston. Terry talks about his dental journey that eventually landed him at Jensen Dental teaching everyone the wonders of this amazing liquid ceramic. His role now is onboarding labs and making sure they have their "ah ha" moment and not become "missing in action".

Then we meet the new VP of Global Sales for Argen, Juston Gates. Juston is new to not only Argen, but also our industry. He talks about where he came from, how it compares to our profession, and some exciting things that Argen has just released.

We wrap up the episode with everyone's favorite person to see at a dental show (and if you don't know her, go be her friend), Nina Rapuano. There are a LOT of full arch restorations being made in out industry. Remember Lab Day Chicago? When dental technicians from around the world could get together with our worry or concern. When the pandemic hit every show, event, conference, and symposium got pushed to a later date or canceled. Most moved until 2021. But not Texas! Texas pulled off a successful IN-PERSON conference in early October. Unfortunately Voices From the Bench could not attend... physically. But our good friends at Argen, set up a booth with a computer and microphone, and got a ton of attendees and speakers to sit down and chat with us. It was fantastic talking to people again with the feel of being in person. This week kicks of a series of conversations we are calling "Live, Not Live From Argen booth at the DLAT". First up we chat with Matthew Douglas, the president of the DLAT. Then long-time fan of the podcast, Lauren Blanton, who actually moved far away and flew back to attend the conference talks with us about multiple CDTs and the grants that helped her get there. And we wrap it up with Dr. John Buie, who was "forced" to learn dental lab work in school, still does it in practice, and likes to share it with dental technicians. So sit back and imagine yourself in an in-person dental meeting and remember someday, soon, we will ALL be able to do this.
