Hey Voices from the Bench community! Jessica Love here, sending a shoutout from Utah!
If you’re passionate about creating natural, beautiful smiles—but want to simplify your workflow without sacrificing aesthetics—this is for you. I’m honored to be part of Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us)’s development team introducing a powerful new stain and glaze system featuring Structure Paste, IPS e.max Ceram Art (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us/products/veneering-materials/ips-e.max-ceram-art). Create stunning depth and lifelike color in as little as one firing.
Let’s continue to innovate, simplify, and create meaningful change—one smile at a time.
Elvis actually made it down to the exhibition halls this year — and hyperDENT (https://www.follow-me-tech.com/hyperdent/) from FOLLOW-ME! Technology (https://www.followmetechnology.com/) was everywhere.
Booth after booth, people were talking milling strategies, templates, and workflows. It felt like a full-on CAM takeover. Their Milling Roadmap scavenger hunt had attendees bouncing between Axsys, Imagine, D.O.F., and Roland collecting stamps like responsible adults…
Responsible adults chasing a bright orange folding electric hyperDENT scooter.
That’s what we love about the FOLLOW-ME! team — world-class CAM engineers talking microns and validation protocols one minute, then ripping around Lab Day the next.
Serious about precision. Not too serious about themselves.
Big shoutout for bringing the brains — and the electric horsepower.
Come see and talk to Elvis and Barb at all these amazing shows in 2026*
* Dental Lab Association of Texas Meeting in Dallas Apr 9-11 https://members.dlat.org/
* exocad Insights in Mallorca, Spain Apr 30 - May 1 https://exocad.com/insights-2026
At the 100-year celebration of the Cal-Lab Association (https://cal-lab.org/), Elvis checks in with past chair Jeff Stronk after the first full day of the meeting to see how things are going. With Barb stepping into the chair role and kicking things off in style, Jeff talks about the incredible energy in the room, the rise in attendance, and the surprising number of first-time lab owners showing up. From powerful panel discussions filled with unforgettable one-liners to honest conversations about succession planning, leadership, and the realities of running a lab, day one proves why this meeting has survived for a century. Unlike traditional trade shows packed with sales pitches, Cal-Lab keeps the focus on real lab owners sharing real experiences, giving attendees practical insights they can take back to their businesses.
After moving over to the Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/) Ballroom at LMT Lab Day Chicago, the conversation shifts to the future of the industry with April Newell, a former dental hygienist who strategically worked her way into the world of additive manufacturing at Nota3D (https://nota3d.com/). Now selling advanced resin and metal 3D printing systems to dental labs, April breaks down how 3D printing evolved from simple model production to full frameworks and implant bars. She explains the realities of metal printing, the technology behind lasers and powder systems, and why labs that invest in metal printing tend to grow faster than they expect. Her perspective highlights just how quickly digital manufacturing is changing the lab landscape—and how dentistry continues to pull people into its orbit for life.
Finally, Elvis talks with Joey Hunter, a veteran technician with nearly 30 years in the industry and a true removable specialist. Joey shares how she answered a newspaper ad looking for a “starving artist” back in the 90s and ended up building a lifelong career in dental technology. From mastering every step of removable fabrication to adapting after losing her hearing during her career, Joey’s story highlights both the artistry and resilience behind the craft. Now working at Renstrom Dental Studio (https://www.renstrom.com/), she reflects on seeing LMT Lab Day Chicago 2026 for the first time and being amazed by how far the industry has come. Her experience reminds everyone that while technology continues to evolve, the hands-on knowledge and artistry of technicians remain at the heart of dentistry.
Hey, listeners—ever wonder what Elvis is doing when he’s not recording Voices from the Bench?
He’s a client rep for Derby Dental Laboratory, out in the field every day doing chairside visits and building relationships. His job is simple—keep doctors happy and keep them coming back.
And he couldn’t do it without iCortica (https://www.icortica.com/).
Right from his phone, Elvis can see sales, remake rates, account notes, risks, and cross-sell opportunities—even before he walks through the door. No spreadsheets. No surprises. Just the info he needs to grow accounts.
Stop digging for data and start taking action.
Head to icortica.com and schedule your demo today.

<itunes:subtitle>Live from NOLA Lab Fest, we talk with Rik Jacobs of Novenda Technologies about a game-changing, production-scale 3D printer that can print full dentures and hard/soft appliances in true multi-material, multi-color—without supports and with massive throughput. Then we catch up with Jess Gray, who shares her journey from front desk to running a fast-growing, digitally driven in-house lab, blending analog and digital workflows, facial scanning, All-on-X, and leadership lessons from the bench up.</itunes:subtitle>

We’re coming to you live from NOLA Lab Fest with two very different, but equally nerd-worthy conversations. A HUGE THANKS to Aidite North America (https://www.aidite.com/) that has made this all available. Go show them some serious love. First up, Elvis sits down with Rik Jacobs from Novenda Technologies (https://www.lake3d.com/) to talk about a truly disruptive production-scale 3D printer that can print multi-material and multi-color—at the same time. We dive into voxel-based printing, integrated hard/soft gradients, no supports, water-soluble wax, massive denture and night guard output, and why centralized production labs should be paying very close attention to what Novenda is building next.
Then we switch gears and catch up with Jess Gray, whose career journey is a masterclass in saying “yes,” learning fast, and building something special. From front desk at Aspen to running a rapidly growing in-house lab in the Finger Lakes region, Jess walks us through analog-to-digital dentures, Exocad self-education, facial scanning for All-on-X, in-office workflows, team building, and what it really takes to scale a lab while still loving the bench. This episode is packed with inspiration, tech talk, and real-world lab ownership lessons you don’t hear every day.
Happy Holidays from Ivoclar!
As the year comes to a close, all of us at Ivoclar want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the incredible Voices From the Bench community. Thank you for your partnership, your trust, and the support you’ve shown throughout the year.
From our Ivoclar family to yours, we wish you a joyful, healthy, and safe holiday season.
May your days be merry, your nights be bright, and your smiles shine like freshly fallen snow.
Ho, ho, ho — Happy Holidays from Ivoclar!
Big news is coming your way in the world of CAM. Our friends at Ivoclar have teamed up with FOLLOW-ME! Technology (https://www.follow-me-tech.com/) to bring the Ivotion Denture System (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us/products/digital-processes/ivotion) into the HyperDent CAM (https://www.follow-me-tech.com/hyperdent/) workflow.
That’s right—your favorite pre-shaded, two-layer Ivotion discs, the ones that let you design and mill a complete denture in one seamless process with no bonding and no mess, are now moving beyond closed systems. Thanks to this new partnership, Ivotion can finally be milled on open machines through HyperDent.
And it gets better: you’ll first see this powerful workflow available on the Roland DWX-53 series mills (https://www.rolanddga.com/products/dental/dwx-53d)—already a staple in so many labs—as well as the Imagine iMills (https://www.imagineusa.com/legacy/s/mills/imill).
If you’ve been waiting for a faster, cleaner, more flexible way to produce full dentures, this is it. Ivoclar and FOLLOW-ME! just made the future of denture manufacturing wide open.
Get ready—HyperDent is about to change the way you mill Ivotion.
Special Guests: Jess Gray and Rik Jacobs.

We’re coming to you live from NOLA Lab Fest with two very different, but equally nerd-worthy conversations. A HUGE THANKS to Aidite North America that has made this all available. Go show them some serious love. First up, Elvis sits down with Rik Jacobs from Novenda Technologies to talk about a truly disruptive production-scale 3D printer that can print multi-material and multi-color—at the same time.

As we continue the amazing conversations we got while at exocad Insights 2024 in Mallorca, Spain, we want to thank again the good people at exocad that made all this possible. This episode brings us three fantastic conversations with 3 fantastic people.
First up is Dr. Marcus White from England who is one of the UK's foremost opinion leaders in digital dentistry and intra oral scanning. Dr. White talks about his on-site lab, utilizing remote designers and milling centers, and his view of the full arch workflow.
Next is UK lab owner, Ashley Bryne. Ashley is the son of a lab owner that told him not to get into the business. It's a great thing he didn't listen to him, because now Ashley owns Brynes Dental Lab, one of the biggest labs into digital and implants in England. Ashley talks about his journey, why his labs uses both exocad and 3shape, bringing technicians to Insights, and being a part of the Conus Group of laboratories.
Then we wrap up the episode with Seth Potter. Since the age of 12, Seth knew he wanted to be a dental technician. After school and working in a lab, Seth soon found himself needing a new direction. So, he got a laptop and exocad and started looking for work. Now he's not only a freelance designer but also a Independent Certified exocad Trainer.

This week we bring you two great conversations from that show. First up is Calvin Song from Creodent (https://creodental.com/). Calvin talks about his role, helping to grow labs with their milling service, and how he is having to fight New York on them trying to make labs collect sales tax on veneers because they are considered cosmetic and not clinically needed. Then 3shape (https://www.3shape.com/) "advanced user" stops by, Sevan Pulurian from Pacific Dental Lab (https://pacdent.net/). Sevan talks about the 3shape study group on Facebook, what's new with version 23, and his quick thinking at Cal-Lab when an hour presentation became an hour and 45 minutes.

Let's face it. Digital is a majority of our workflow. At least for fixed and it's quickly becoming the workflow for removables. As labs scale, there has been a need for someone to handle the design side of the production. Enter Full Contour (https://www.fullcontour.com/). In 2011 Rob Laizure and his father decided to take their lab and dedicate it to only design services. Slowly scaling as they grew, they soon went from 3 technicians in an apartment to over 150 worldwide. Rob talks about the journey, the relationships, and the need to deliver 100% to labs. Now even bigger, Full Contour became part of the 3shape (https://www.3shape.com/) family and renamed 3Shape Design Services and still offers the amazing options and constant quality we are all use to.
Are you attending the LMT Lab Day show in Chicago from Feb 23rd-25th (https://lmtmag.com/lmtlabday)? Does your lab use Magic Touch? If not, you should think about switching just so you can use icortica (https://icortica.com/). Icortica is a program that uses all the data you already collect in Magic Touch and puts it in one easy to see, use, and understand dashboard. Look at every account and see trends, sales, notes, payments, and even remake percentages. Use the data you already have to take your lab and your customer service to the next level. Elvis uses it daily and swears it is a huge part to his success working at the lab. Head over to icortica.com/voices (https://icortica.com/voices-from-the-bench/) to learn more or send an email to Rob Nazzal at rob@icortica.com and tell him you heard about it on Voices From the Bench!
Special Guest: Rob Laizure.

Let's face it. Digital is a majority of our workflow. At least for fixed and it's quickly becoming the workflow for removables. As labs scale, there has been a need for someone to handle the design side of the production. Enter Full Contour. Now even bigger, Full Contour became part of the 3shape family and renamed 3Shape Design Services and still offers the amazing options and constant quality we are all use to.

What do you do when you can't travel to see friends? You do the next best thing. The Dental Laboratory Association of Texas (https://members.dlat.org/membership/) held their annual conference in October this year. While Elvis and Barb wanted to be there, they couldn't. So the good people at Argen (https://argen.com/#/) set up a computer and microphone at their booth and got people from the event to sit down and do the next best thing we are calling "Live, Not Live" from the Argen booth at the DLAT. Up first we talk with Larry Mercadel CDT. He's retired from the Air Force and he's retired from the bench and loving every minute of it. Still passionate for the industry and the DLAT, Larry is there to learn, mingle, and help the show run. Next up is Scott McGaha, owner of Precision Ortho (http://precisionortho.biz/), who comes on to talk about his lab, how he got started, what they do, and adapting with new technology. Great times from the Argen booth at the DLAT.
The UP 3D P5 milling maching (https://www.aurident.com/p5/) from Aurident (https://www.aurident.com/)is a 5 axis, efficient, dry mill. Great for milling zirconia, PMMA and wax. It boasts software that produces high precision and fast milling. It can mill a crown in 14 minutes and the tool life yields about 60-80 hours of quality restorations. A game changer for labs of all sizes, big and small. For under $20K, a small lab can now do their own milling instead of outsourcing and reducing their profits. Quite impressive! Give Aurident a call at 800-422-7373 or you can visit their website at aurident.com.
Whip Mix (https://whipmix.com/) introduces the Bellus3D Dental Pro Face Scanning Solution. This new, practical addition to dentistry provides the dentist with a fast, easy, and affordable way to capture a detailed 3D facial scan and the laboratory an intelligent way to create the smile design. With this app, a complete 3D facial (and even whole head) scan can even be captured for virtual model and articulator alignment.
You can now put a face to your digital workflow with the Bellus3D Dental Pro. Learn more about this sought-after product by calling Lorena Lighthart at 970-218-9101 or emailing her at llighthart@whipmix.com. And be sure to watch Lee Culp presenting a Whip Mix webinar entitled “Bellus3D Dental Pro – Creating the Virtual Patient” at http://www.whipmix.com/webinars.
Special Guests: Larry Mercadel CDT and Scott D. McGaha.
