<itunes:subtitle>Live from LMT Lab Day Chicago, Elvis and Barb capture three conversations that highlight the future of the lab industry. From Savannah and Josh’s fast-moving digital removable workflows at GPS Digital RPD, to Darin McCue’s blunt reminder that labs need strong leadership—not just great technicians and how Saleslift Consulting can help—and finally Vicki and Carrie’s push to empower smaller labs through smarter partnerships and buying power with Savvy Lab Solutions, every discussion points to the same truth: adapting isn’t optional.</itunes:subtitle>

<description>Hey Voices from the Bench community! Jessica Love here, sending a shoutout from Utah!
If you’re passionate about creating natural, beautiful smiles—but want to simplify your workflow without sacrificing aesthetics—this is for you. I’m honored to be part of Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us)’s development team introducing a powerful new stain and glaze system featuring Structure Paste, IPS e.max Ceram Art (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us/products/veneering-materials/ips-e.max-ceram-art). Create stunning depth and lifelike color in as little as one firing.
Let’s continue to innovate, simplify, and create meaningful change—one smile at a time.
When it comes to digital dentures, design is easy—manufacturing is where things get messy.
That’s why the Elevate Denture Solution brings it all together. Built by Roland DGSHAPE (https://www.rolanddga.com/applications/dental-cad-cam), Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us), and FOLLOW-ME! Technology Group (https://www.follow-me-tech.com/), it combines machine, materials, and CAM into one fully optimized workflow—so you get consistent, high-quality results without the guesswork.
Want to simplify production and scale with confidence? Check it out at rollanddga.com/elevate.
Live from LMT Lab Day Chicago, Elvis and Barb bring the mics to the Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us) stage for three very different conversations that all point to one big theme—this industry is evolving fast, and you better evolve with it.
First up, Savannah Elkins and Josh Williams from GPS Digital RPD (https://gpsdigitalrpd.com/) jump into the digital removable world, where analog roots meet full-on additive workflows. Savannah shares how she went from pouring models to cranking out 100+ RPD frameworks a day, learning design in record time through hands-on training and a little “YouTube University.” The conversation dives into printed frameworks, flexible materials, and the push toward becoming a full lab-to-lab removable resource. It’s fast, it’s scalable, and yes… they absolutely test durability by throwing, stepping on, and possibly feeding things to alligators.
Next, Darin McCue from SalesLift Consulting (https://salesliftconsulting.com/) flips the script and talks about what’s really holding labs back—and it’s not production. With a mix of passion and hard truth, Darin explains that most lab owners aren’t failing because they can’t make teeth—they’re failing because they don’t run a business. From leadership and communication to sales and team culture, he challenges owners to step off the bench and into a leadership role before burnout or failure forces the issue. His message is clear: if you don’t work on your business, it will eventually work against you.
Finally, Vicki Thomas and Carrie Ling bring a completely different energy, focused on community, collaboration, and leveling the playing field for smaller labs. Vicki shares the story behind launching Savvy Lab Solutions (https://savvylabsolutions.com/), a buying group built to give small and mid-sized labs access to the same pricing and vendor relationships as the big players. Carrie backs it up with real-world experience, explaining how vendors now proactively reach out with discounts and new products—saving time, money, and opening doors she didn’t even know existed. The conversation highlights the power of partnerships, word-of-mouth growth, and the realization that 78% of the industry is made up of labs that have historically been overlooked.
Join us at exocad Insights 2026 (https://exocad.com/insights-2026), happening April 30–May 1, 2026, on the stunning island of Mallorca, Spain. This two-day event features powerhouse keynotes, hands-on workshops, live software demos, and top-tier industry showcases—all in one unforgettable setting.

"Live" from the Ivoclar ballroom at Lab Day 2026, Elvis and Barb dives into conversations that perfectly capture what this industry is all about—innovation, relationships, and a whole lot of nerding out.
We kick things off with Frederic Rapp, who went from growing up in his dad’s basement lab in France to scaling it into one of the largest labs in Europe. After selling the business, he found his way back into the industry through innovation—helping labs unlock the gold mine sitting inside their own data with icortica (https://www.icortica.com/). From dashboards to AI-driven insights and even voice-activated notes in the parking lot, it’s all about working smarter, not harder… and maybe not looking like an idiot when you walk into a doctor’s office.
Then things shift to a great partnership with Casey Baldwin and Darin Lockaby, where we get into a seriously cool collaboration between Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us) and DESS (https://www.dess-usa.com/). Think plug-and-play workflows that let labs mill their own abutments in-house—FDA compliant, streamlined, and actually simple. With margins tighter than ever, this kind of control over production isn’t just nice… it’s becoming necessary.
From scaling labs to scaling data, from implants to AI, this episode is packed with insight, laughs, and a clear message: the labs that embrace technology (without losing the human touch) are the ones that are going to win.

<h3>When it comes to digital dentures, design is easy—manufacturing is where things get messy.</h3>

<h3>That’s why the Elevate Denture Solution brings it all together. Built by <a href="https://www.rolanddga.com/applications/dental-cad-cam" rel="nofollow">Roland DGSHAPE</a>, <a href="https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us" rel="nofollow">Ivoclar</a>, and <a href="https://www.follow-me-tech.com/" rel="nofollow">FOLLOW-ME! Technology Group</a>, it combines machine, materials, and CAM into one fully optimized workflow—so you get consistent, high-quality results without the guesswork.</h3>

<h3>Want to simplify production and scale with confidence? Check it out at rollanddga.com/elevate.</h3>

<p>&quot;Live&quot; from the Ivoclar ballroom at Lab Day 2026, Elvis and Barb dives into conversations that perfectly capture what this industry is all about—innovation, relationships, and a whole lot of nerding out.</p>

<p>We kick things off with <strong>Frederic Rapp</strong>, who went from growing up in his dad’s basement lab in France to scaling it into one of the largest labs in Europe. After selling the business, he found his way back into the industry through innovation—helping labs unlock the gold mine sitting inside their own data with <a href="https://www.icortica.com/" rel="nofollow">icortica</a>. From dashboards to AI-driven insights and even voice-activated notes in the parking lot, it’s all about working smarter, not harder… and maybe not looking like an idiot when you walk into a doctor’s office.</p>

<p>Then things shift to a great partnership with <strong>Casey Baldwin</strong> and <strong>Darin Lockaby</strong>, where we get into a seriously cool collaboration between <a href="https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us" rel="nofollow">Ivoclar</a> and <a href="https://www.dess-usa.com/" rel="nofollow">DESS</a>. Think plug-and-play workflows that let labs mill their own abutments in-house—FDA compliant, streamlined, and actually simple. With margins tighter than ever, this kind of control over production isn’t just nice… it’s becoming necessary.</p>

<p>From scaling labs to scaling data, from implants to AI, this episode is packed with insight, laughs, and a clear message: the labs that embrace technology (without losing the human touch) are the ones that are going to win.</p>

<itunes:subtitle>Jay Collins shares his journey from a split Philadelphia family of steamfitters and dental technicians to becoming the bold, growth-driven leader behind thedentalab.net. After the 2008 crash forced him out of construction, he dove into dental lab sales with relentless cold-calling, developing his “aggressively calm” approach that challenges traditional lab-owner mindsets. This episode is a fast-paced, hilarious deep dive into sales psychology, growth through mergers, and why labs must treat sales as seriously as production if they want to survive and scale.</itunes:subtitle>

Elvis actually made it down to the exhibition halls this year — and hyperDENT (https://www.follow-me-tech.com/hyperdent/) from FOLLOW-ME! Technology (https://www.followmetechnology.com/) was everywhere.
Booth after booth, people were talking milling strategies, templates, and workflows. It felt like a full-on CAM takeover. Their Milling Roadmap scavenger hunt had attendees bouncing between Axsys, Imagine, D.O.F., and Roland collecting stamps like responsible adults…
Responsible adults chasing a bright orange folding electric hyperDENT scooter.
That’s what we love about the FOLLOW-ME! team — world-class CAM engineers talking microns and validation protocols one minute, then ripping around Lab Day the next.
Serious about precision. Not too serious about themselves.
Big shoutout for bringing the brains — and the electric horsepower.
Come see and talk to Elvis and Barb at all these amazing shows in 2026*

This week we finally get Jay Collins to stop dodging Elvis long enough to sit down and share one of the wildest journeys in dental lab history. From a family split between union steamfitters and dental technicians in Philadelphia to surviving “The Great Brotherly Lab War,” Jay’s story is packed with grit, loyalty, and a whole lot of Irish Catholic chaos. What started with an uncle drafted into dental technology during Vietnam eventually turned into a multi-generation lab legacy—and Jay swearing he’d never get into teeth… only to build a powerhouse anyway.
After the 2008 crash wiped out his construction business, Jay bet everything on selling outsourced restorations door-to-door, sleeping in his car, showering at the gym, and cold-calling hundreds of offices a week. What followed was the development of his unapologetically bold, psychologically savvy sales approach—what he calls being “aggressively calm.” From pushing doctors to “no,” to matching their energy toe-to-toe, to walking into offices as “the lab” and walking out with cases in hand, Jay breaks down the mindset shift most lab owners desperately need: sales isn’t optional, and it definitely isn’t accidental.
Now leading multiple lab locations under the brilliantly simple name thedentallab.net (https://thedentallab.net/), Jay shares hard truths about growth, mergers, firing abusive clients, and why cutting your sales department in tough times is the worst move you can make. If you’ve ever struggled with prospecting, scaling, or standing your ground with doctors, this episode is packed with practical strategies, hilarious role-playing, and a reminder that confidence—backed by accountability—wins every time.

We return to the "Olympics of Dental", IDS in Cologne Germany. Set up very nicely in the exocad (https://exocad.com/) booth, Elvis and Barb got to talk to three more amazing people from around the world. THANK YOU EXOCAD!!
We start the episode with Amy Tate who joined her uncle a year ago at nexus dental laboratory (https://nexus.dental/) because she saw all the amazing places it has taken him. Now enrolled in a 3 year online course, a mentorship, and also working in the lab, Amy is all in with dental technology and shares her hopes for the future.
Then we chat with Rami Gamil, who years ago saw a need for dental technology in Egypt. After getting a degree in it in France, Rami now owns multiple locations called TriScan that provides iOS, CBCT, and bunch of other digital services to local dentists. His next focus is all about education.
We wrap up the episode with the dental technician to Denturists, Pam Rehm. Growing up in Canada, Pam spent a fair amount of time in a dental chair. That drove her to become a dental technician and she found out how great the Denturist community was. After getting into teaching, she truly found her passion. She’s now with Argen Canada (https://argen.com/#/) and her focus is making sure Denturists get a digital workflow that works for their practice.

<description>The amazing people we talked to in the Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us) Ballroom during the 40th anniversary of LMT Lab Day Chicago just keep coming and this week we have a stellar line up.
First up is Eric Kukucka. Eric came on the podcast years ago to talk about his multiple denturist practices in Canada. But he has since sold them and has joined the Aspen Dental (https://www.aspendental.com/) group as their Vice President of Clinical Removable Prosthetics &amp;amp; Design Technologies. Eric talks about going from making dentures for hundreds of patients to working with a team to produce quality dentures for millions.
Then we chat with Chelsea Homire, who has years of dental assistant experience, but when given the oppritunity to learn the in-office lab work, she took off. With a passion for printing, Chelsea is now teaching other offices (and even a few labs) how they can optimize their digital workflow.
We wrap up the episode with Brittany Mitchell. You might know her becuase she designed (and made the denture) on our "Just Say No to Brushing" shirt, but she's also a talented removable technician. Brittany talks about starting in at the front desk, drawing a picture that got notices and placed in the lab, falling in love with it, and making digital dentures for a 12 doctor dental group.
Don't miss this incredible webinar with Tanya Little, a dentist from beautiful Vancouver, Canada. We would like to invite you to a special webinar that she's hosting with Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us) and LMT (https://lmtmag.com/) on Wednesday, May 7th, titled "Reflections from a Denturist: 20 Years of Crafting Dentures!". In this program, she will review the incredible history of removables with Ivoclar and focus on the new and exciting evolution based print resin and of course, the PM7. Her goal is to provide you with several key takeaways that will allow you to work smarter and not harder. You can join on May 7th by registering at https://lmtmag.com/webinars/reflections-from-a-denturist-20-years-of-crafting-dentures
Are you a dental lab in need of more talent to improve your bottom line and keep production on schedule? Are you a dental tech with great skills but feel you're being limited at your current lab? Well, the answer is here and this is precisely why WIN WIN GO (https://www.winwingo.com/) was created. The dental lab and dental tech community needed a place where labs and technicians can meet, talk about their needs and connect in ways that foster a win win outcome. As a tech. If you're ready to make a change, thinking about moving in the next year or just curious what's out there, sign up today. It's totally free. As a lab, you might be feeling the frustration of paying the big employment site so much and getting so few tech candidates. We understand they don't much care about our industry. WINWINGO.com is simply the best place for lab techs and lab owners to actively engage in creating their ideal future. WINWINGO.com, how dental techs find paradise. Special Guests: Brittany Mitchell, Chelsea Homire, and Eric Kukucka DD.

Meet Jamie Stover. If you spend any time at dental shows or just around the industry in general, you have probably crossed paths with Jamie before. You see, Jamie started in the industry back in 1998 after a suggestion from his dentist brother. After finding his way into a dental lab, Jamie has been a delivery driver, model room technician, ceramist, and so much more. It wasn't long before he was manager and even Operations Manager. While he was moving the lab from analog to digital, Jamie found the Carbon Printer (https://www.carbon3d.com/) and discovered something great. He now works for them as Senior Manager of Application Strategy and Integration. What does that mean? Well, we had to ask too. Turns out Jamie gets to help any lab with a Carbon printer with any question or issue the lab has. Even if it isn't related to the Carbon Printer. How cool is that? He's also the current Chair of The National Board for Certification (https://nbccert.org/homepage.cfm) in Dental Laboratory Technology and talks about the importance of getting your certification and giving back to the industry.

<description>Join Elvis and Barb at the DTG Symposium on September 15-16 at the GC America Facility in Alsip, IL (https://dtgevents.com/)
Let's be honest, digital outsourcing is a great way to keep up on the growing amount of work coming into labs and the lack of finding good technicians to handle it. That is where Evident (https://evidentdigital.com/) comes in. Evident (https://evidentlabs.com/) has been providing lab management software for 15 years and understands what a lab needs. This week we meet the VP of Digital Design Services, Guy Manzies. Guy talks about all the things Evident does. From the Lab Management software that stated the whole company to their 350 designers working 24 hours a day to help with your production. We also get into how they train and scale so many technicians, how they cater to your lab’s preferences, their new integration with ExoCAD (https://exocad.com/), and some interesting trends that only a company of that size and global footprint can see.
Did you know that Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us) has Digital Equipment Sales Specialists (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us/landing-pages/digital-equipment)?

<description>On August 27th many brave and fearless dental technicians will take to the water and road to participate in the 2023 Chicago Triathlon (https://www.chicagotriathlon.com/). PLEASE head over to dentallabfoundation.org (https://dentallabfoundation.org/) and click the DONATE TODAY button. Log in and choose the “Race for the Future” option. There you can put the name of a racer you want to sponsor. You can put:
Barb Warner
Team Abutments (Elvis Dahl, Mark Williamson, Bobby Kennedy)
Voices From the Bench (50/50 split between Barb and Elvis' team)
This week we talk about the underappreciated model room technicians that make the foundation of everything we make possible. Marsha Mais found herself in a dental laboratory. They put her where they put everyone when they start, the model room. Marsha loved it. She was good at it. Unfortunately she saw that she did not get the respect and appreciation that many other technicians got. Marsha talks about her journey, some really neat tricks she has picked up over the years, and how we (as a industry) can do better showing love to the hard working people that is the "frontline" to all the analog (and sometimes digital) work coming in.

And then we wrap up the episode continuing the yearly tradition of talking to Randi and Scott James from Renstrom Dental Studio (https://www.renstrom.com/). Randi and Scott are almost done building out their new dream lab. They talk about all the "fun" it is that go through the process, the changes along the way, and how they are going to handle of moving 50+ employees 15 minutes down the road.

<description>When we see unique and interesting labs online, we get to have them on the podcast and talk to them. That is exactly what we did when we saw The Hive (https://www.thehivedental.co.uk/) on Instantgram (https://www.instagram.com/hive_dental_laboratory/). Turns out it owned by Eleanor and Emily Pittard. Together they have created an amazing award winning (really) dental laboratory (https://www.thehivedental.co.uk/the-dentistry-awards-2021/) in Dorset, UK. Emily is a Clinical Dental Technician (think denturist) and Eleanor is the mastermind behind the business and marketing. They talk about creating The Hive, taking it mobile during the pandemic, setting it up to see patients directly, and making sure they are giving back to the environment.
If you want to save, and also grow, Gro3X (https://www.gro3x.com/) is, where you should go!

<description>A lot of labs fabricate overdentures. Hader bars, Dolder Bars, and wrap around bars for fixed hybrids. All very common in our industry. But years ago Arian Deutsch from Deutsch Dental Arts (http://www.deutschlab.com/) found a better solution and built a lab and career around it. Taking skills from both CAD/CAM and handcrafted art, Arian was able to make patient removable restorations by using 0 degree gold Electro-formed substructures friction fitted over copings that use no wearable nylon parts. Super interesting. He also talks about his journey into denturism, building his dream education center, and what's next for the Deutsch's.
Aurident (https://www.aurident.com/) offers so much more than just the P5 michine (https://www.aurident.com/p5/). They offer all the needed accessories like Nabertherm furnaces (https://www.aurident.com/furnaces/) and vacuums by Renfert. And all the consumables can be got in one place! Aurident has Delta Zirconia (https://www.aurident.com/delta-zirconia/), Aurident Zr (https://www.aurident.com/aurident-zr-zirconia/), Aurident cutting tools, and Quest pmma (https://www.aurident.com/quest-pmma-shaded/) ! Whip Mix (https://whipmix.com/) is very excited to announce the new PRO 4K large format 3D printer from Asiga. It’s ideal for printing any kind of model, dentures, splints, surgical guides, impression trays and more.

<description>Denturism is a great way for a dental technician to take their career to the "next level". It's really the best of both worlds. Maybe you don't think you can do it? Maybe it's not regulated in your state? On this week's episode the president of the National Denturist Association Eric Hansen and past guest Patrick Allen talk about running their practices during COVID, working with states to become regulated, and their annual conference that is being held virtually this year and how it is a great way for a technician to get a "taste" of denturism.
